Research supports that children need at least 60 minutes of physical activity a day. Due to budget cuts, physical education and health programs are being cut and/or eliminated in some schools and districts. The Society of Health and Physical Educators (SHAPE) Colorado is the state organization that represents all physical education and health teachers and programs in the state of Colorado. They provide leadership, professional development and advocacy opportunities for educators across the state.
They advocate and lobby for physical education and health programs and are the voice for all children and students in Colorado to have access to quality physical education and health programs throughout their entire K-12 education. Their current advocacy projects include traveling to Washington DC to ask for full funding of Title IV and Title II funds (federal funding) for schools and at the state level are currently working with legislators to ask that they prioritize physical education and health for students as they re-evaluate the school finance formula in Colorado.
Once again, due to financial restraints and cuts, SHAPE Colorado’s advocacy funds have been eliminated. Many Colorado teachers and SHAPE Colorado Board Members are using money from their own pockets to pay for resources to share with others and are traveling on their own dime to continue the important work of advocating and lobbying on this important issue. All proceeds of this fundraiser will go towards this non-profit organization (all donations can be written off on your 2018 taxes) to assist with their advocacy and lobbying efforts. Please help us support this organization, as the work they do is vital to the future of physical education and health programs in the state of Colorado.
What is the Strong Enough Fitness Challenge?
The Strong Enough Fitness Challenge is an event designed to bring awareness and support to communities in need; such as domestic violence and physical education and health school programs. Registration fees and pledge donations from participants who get sponsors for an event in the challenge get donated to a non-profit in need that gives back to others.
There are four events: a push up event, sit up event, a 2 mile run and a hike. This year, there will also be a special stick (Progressive Arnis) seminar lead by Renshi Jason May before/after the hike at Chautauqua Park. Participants may do all of the events or choose just to do specific events. Participants can choose to have their efforts scored in accordance to Army standards or just participate for fun! Participants can range in age from five years old to adults.
There will be a silent auction, special patches for the top male and female in each age bracket and top male and female overall, and a raffle for karate bucks and an AWESOME standing desk ($500 value)! Are you not able to participate but still want to be a part of the fun? Individuals who are not able to physically participate are encouraged to come cheer on participants, donate to/sponsor a participant, or become a scorekeeper for the events.
Are you not able to attend and still want to support the cause? You can still make a monetary donation!
